Master of Education (M.Ed)

Master in Education is a 2 year Postgraduate Academic program with 2 Semesters, however, some institutes offer a 1-year Regular M.Ed. course like – Shivaji University. The minimum period of passing the course is 2 years and the maximum is 4 years. This period duration may vary from institute to institute. Masters Degree in Education is available in various subjects.M.Ed. is mainly offered by institutions that are recognized by the National Council of Teacher Education, New Delhi. It is a government body in charge of improving and implementing teacher education programs in the country.

It is mandatory to pursue an M.Ed. degree if one wishes to teach at college and university level. It involves research work on education, psychology, sociology among others.

Master of Education Degree essentially provides educational research, social and psychological foundations of the discipline and also a gateway towards advanced technical teaching, curriculum and training.

Courses

Master of Education (M.Ed)  Course can be pursued either as a Regular Course of two years or through Correspondence/Distance Education Mode. The correspondence course is of 1-year duration.

Masters in Education Programs involve instruction, counseling, and administration and It is especially meant for educators preferring to advance their skills in the field.

In every state in India, there are several institutions that offer Master of Education courses. M.Ed offers students the opportunity to opt for electives or specialization in the last semester of the course.

The average M.Ed course fee will be from 10,000 to 50,000 per annum. Which may vary depending upon the universities or colleges standards.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Aspiring students should have completed a Bachelor of Education degree from a recognized university board. The percentage of marks varies from institute to institute though 50-55% in B.Ed./B.El.Ed. is the most common percentage.
  • Some universities or Colleges need Post Graduation along with B.Ed
  • The admission to the course is based on merit, the admission procedure and mode of selection may vary from one university to another.
  • Some universities or states conduct their own entrance examination, to select deserving candidates.
  • Candidates possessing BElEd (Bachelor of Elementary Education) or BAEd (BA Education)/ BScEd (BSc Education)/ MScEd (MSc Education) degree are sometimes also eligible to apply for the course depending on the policy of the institution in which they are applying.
  • SC/ST/OBC/Differently abled candidates get 5% relaxation in qualifying percentage in graduation.
  • Age is not a barrier to this course.

Entrance Examination

The admission process and selection criteria for MEd varies from university to university. While some universities/ colleges offer admission on the basis of merit determined through candidates’ marks in the qualifying exam (BEd/ BElEd/ BAEd/ BScEd/ MScEd), others conduct written entrance exams. The MEd entrance exam pattern is such that candidates are usually tested on three parameters – Teaching Aptitude, Reasoning Ability and Language Proficiency

Aligarh Muslim University Test (AMU): AMU M.Ed Admission is done in two ways, depending on the courses, ie, Departmental Admission Test (conducted at Aligarh) and Entrance Exam (conducted at designated centres).

Banaras Hindu University Post Graduate Entrance Test (BHU PET): An entrance test conducted by Banaras Hindu University. The exam is operated online in 200 cities across India. 

CUCET: A national level examination which is regulated by 14 central universities jointly. It is a combined entrance test organized for providing admission into various courses including M.Ed

Delhi University Entrance Test (DUET): An online admission test conducted by NTA (National Testing Agency) offering admissions in UG, PG and doctorate courses. 

Jammu University Entrance Test (JUET): A qualifying entrance exam for admission to Post Graduate Degree (PG), PG Diploma and Undergraduate Programs offered by Jammu University, Jammu that is conducted annually. 

Lucknow University M.Ed Admission Test: Admission to M.Ed course in Lucknow University is done on the basis of a written test followed by an interview. Candidates seeking admission can apply online on the official website.

Patna University M.Ed Entrance Test (MEET):  Patna University has a separate department of post-graduate teaching and research institute. Candidates who want to appear for the M.Ed entrance exam(MEET) must have obtained a minimum of 50% aggregate marks in B.Ed. B.A.Ed./B.Sc.Ed. B.El.Ed or D.El.Ed./D.Ed.
