Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS)
Ibn-e- Sina, popularly known as Avicenna, one of the greatest scholars of Unani Tibb (medicine), described Unani Medicine as “It is the science through which we learn different states of the body through terms of health and, if not in terms of health, and the means by which health is likely to be lost and, if lost, restored.”
Unani-tibb or Unani Medicine is a form of traditional medicine practiced in countries of the Middle East and South Asia. It refers to a tradition of Graeco-Arabic medicine based on the teachings of Greek physicist Hippocrates and Roman physicist Galen and developed by Arab and Persian physicists including Rhazes (al-Razi), Avicenna (Ibn-e- Sina), Al-Zahrawi, and Ibn Nafis into an elaborate medical system in the middle ages.
It originated nearly 2500 years ago in Greece, which is originally herbo-animo- mineral (approximately 90 percent herbal, 4-5 percent natural, and 5-6 percent mineral). Not only is it the original science of medicine but also a rich storehouse of medicine principles and philosophies that can be of immense value to medicine in particular and to science in general.
It is a comprehensive medical system dealing meticulously with the different health and disease states. It offers healthcare which is promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative. The system ‘s fundamental, diagnostic, and treatment modalities are based on scientific principles and holistic health and healing concepts. Accordingly, in relation to its environment, it considers individuals and stresses body, mind and soul wellbeing. A patient’s disposition (Mizaj) is given great importance in diagnosing and treating diseases. Temperament is often taken into account when determining the most acceptable diet and lifestyle for supporting a specific individual’s health. Despite constant neglect, this art of healing not only survives but also compliments other medicine systems.
The Unani Health System includes treatment of diseases linked to many of the human body ‘s processes and organs. Treatments for chronic skin, liver, musculoskeletal, and reproductive conditions, immunological, and lifestyle disorders were found to be highly effective and appropriate. Unani System of Medicine’s unique features are the use of elatives, exhilarants, aphrodisiacs, organ-specific tonics and immunomodulatory drugs, temperament-specific drugs, adverse effect correctives, coctives and purgatives etc. Within Unani Medicine Process, cosmoceutics, nutraceutics, aromatics and the related therapies are essential components of treatment.
For both health and illness, Unani physicians give primary importance to a person’s diet and digestive status. It is recommended that different food regimens be used when treating patients according to their disposition. Proper diets are supposed to produce good humors (Akhlā\āliā) while bad humors (Akhlā\ Radiyya) are produced by improper diets. Thus, medication coupled with proper diet can correct the humoral imbalance. The physician prescribes the drugs according to the patient’s temperament, causative humour, involved organ faculty and disease severity. Such medications are categorized according to the particular personality (Mizāj), and are graded according to their efficacy in the first, second , third and fourth degree.
It is currently practiced in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan , Sri Lanka, Nepal, China, Iran , Iraq, Malaysia , Indonesia, the countries of Central Asia, and the Middle East. In India over the years the system has been scientifically developed, nurtured and continuously incorporated into the healthcare delivery system.
Unani system of medicine also benefited from the native medical systems in vogue at the time in various parts of Central Asia. That is why this system is known, in different parts of the world, with different names such as Greco-Arab Medicine, Ionian Medicine, Arab Medicine, Islamic Medicine, Traditional Medicine, Oriental Medicine etc.
In India, stating that admission to B.U.M.S. courses on the basis of scores obtained in NEET would be made compulsory. The state counseling authorities shall issue the application forms for admission to the degree course by a stipulated date for the interested candidates.
