Eligibility Criteria
MCom is offered by many universities and colleges in Kerala and other states in regular as well as distance education mode. Eligibility criteria for MCom course is given below:
- Minimum of 50% marks in aggregate in BCom or BCom (Honours) or equivalent from a recognized university.
- Some universities also induct students who have completed BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration), BFIA (Bachelor of Financial Investment and Analysis) and BBE (Bachelor in Business Economics) with a minimum score of 60%
- Reserved category students are entitled to marks relaxation of up to 5%
- State level universities also offer more marks relaxation to home students
Entrance Examination
Generally there is no entrance exam for M.Com admission. Most universities offer merit based admission to the course. In the cases of most of the top-ranking universities and colleges, the aspiring candidates are offered admissions on the basis of an entrance test conducted by the respective educational institution. This is done due to the high number of applications received by such universities and colleges.
Job Profiles
After completing MCom, a candidate can seek employment in the Banking, Finance, Service and Insurance sector. There are various other options for MCom degree holders in private, public and government sectors. Nationalised banks, Railways, Income Tax and other such government departments are good options for MCom degree holders to aim for a secure and prosperous career. Students can also opt for PhD and do research work in the field. They can apply for: (1). Doctor of Commerce (DCom) (2). Doctor of Business Administration (DBA). MCom is most popular among aspiring teachers / lecturers and researchers in commerce and related subjects. UGC-NET / JRF and PhD are among popular options for MCom degree holders.
Government Sector: One can apply for all PSC, SSC and UPSC jobs for which Degree and PG are the qualifications. This includes Civil Service.

Q) Which is the better course between MBA and MCom? How can you decide which course to take up after graduation?
A) M.Com and MBA are both good choices of postgraduate courses for a Commerce student. However, both of these courses are vastly different in a number of aspects, including their core focus areas. MBA is a professional course that focuses more on industry-requirements and helping students get better management jobs with more practical knowledge. On the other hand, MCom is a course targeting theoretical knowledge in the field of Commerce along with focuses on industry-requirements and helping students get better management jobs as well as academic pursuits in Finance and Commerce.
